Accessibility statement

Our target

The Care Record aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. We write for people in their 50s, 60s and 70s, often reading on a phone in a waiting room. The site should work for you whether you use a mouse, a keyboard, a screen reader, a magnifier or a zoomed browser.

What we have built

  • Body text is 17 pixels, a step larger than the usual 16, and no text a reader sees on a public page is smaller than 15 pixels.
  • Body text is set in Atkinson Hyperlegible Next, from a family of typefaces that Braille Institute designed for readers with low vision.
  • Text and interface colors are checked against a contrast ratio of at least 4.5 to 1 every time the site is built, and a failing pair stops the release.
  • Every control can be reached and used from the keyboard, and the keyboard focus is always visible.
  • On a phone, the buttons and links the site draws are at least 44 pixels tall, so they are easier to tap.
  • Pages use landmarks and one clear heading structure, so a screen reader can jump from section to section.
  • Form fields have labels, and errors are announced and tied to the field they describe.

Known gaps

The design system the site is built on is tested with automated accessibility checks. We have not yet tested the site with people who use screen readers or other assistive technology, and we want to.

Many documents we link to, such as state application forms in PDF, are published by agencies, and some of them are hard to use with assistive technology. We cannot fix those files, but if one is a barrier for you, tell us and we will look for an accessible version or another way to get the same information.

Report a barrier

If something on the site is hard or impossible to use, tell us through the contact form or by email to hello@thecarerecord.com. Say which page it was, what you were trying to do, and the device, browser or assistive technology you were using. We will reply, tell you what we found, and either fix the problem or get you the information another way while we work on it.

Why this page is not in search

This page describes the site itself rather than answering a question people search for, so we keep it out of search engines. It is linked from the footer of every page so anyone who needs it can find it. We wrote this statement on November 2, 2026.
