Who qualifies
A&D waiver participants (adults 18 or older who would otherwise need nursing facility care). Respite gives unpaid caregivers short-term breaks. The caregiver or participant selects, trains and directs the respite provider, and it can be given in the participant's home, a certified family home, a developmental disabilities agency, a residential assisted living facility or an adult day health facility.
People caring for a family member or friend who need help with the demands of caregiving. The local Area Agency on Aging helps them find services, including respite (a break from caregiving), caregiver training and support groups.
Two steps. First apply for Medicaid online through idalink, by phone or at a field office, or by mail or fax. Then take part in a Level of Care Determination, which decides whether the person needs the kind of care a nursing home provides. If income is too high for regular Medicaid, a higher income limit can apply once the person meets that level of care.
